After wandering in the wood, Tom needed for a glass of water to cool his baked lips. At the peak of the mountain ;looking down, Tom saw a little cottage near the clear stream. Tom hurrily went down in the belief that he could get there in five minutes, when it actually mile off and a thousand feet down. When he reach at the base of the mountain, he ran through the field and terrace before he reach his destination.
Tom came slowly up to the open door and then peeped in, half alfraid. There sat by the empty fireplace, an old woman in red petticoat and cubby little children. Tom hesitated whether he should turn back or go in and ask for a glass of water and some food. But before Tom could make up his mind, the children started at Tom's black figure and they cried.The old woman startled. Tom ask her for the water, but she gave him milk and a bit of bread instead. Then the old woman ask Tom some question doubting if he was telling the truth. But at the end of coversation she believed him. The old women put Tom in an out house and let him sleep on the hay and an old rug. The she went out from the outhouse.
Tom did not fall asleep. Turning and Tossing, He felt so hot all over that he longed to bathe himself in the cool river. Tom somnambulate. Then found himself standing before a clear stream. Desiring to be clean, Tom take off his clothes and jump into the river. All this time, he had not notice that the Irishwoman had followed him. She had stepped into the water and the fairies came to her for she was the Queen for them all. The fairies made Tom fell fast asleep there at the stream.
The old woman came back to look at Tom, but found no one. Then she began to think if Tom had tricked her. But she altered her mind the next day. When people from the Harthover came to her and told her that a chimney sweeper is missing, after realizing the they have mistook Tom for a theif. At Tom's side, when he woke, he found himself swimming in the stream in a young baby form. In fact, the fairies had turned him into a water-baby.
